Sports Saturday #42 - Baseball (NES)
It's impossible to deny how much video games have evolved over the past 40 years, and looking back on the stuff I played as a kid seems almost laughable compared to today's AAA fare.
BUT, while those lowly games of yore didn't have much in the way of graphical innovation, gameplay physics or even much immersive depth - it doesn't mean they weren't fun or engaging.
Forty years ago this month, Nintendo released their home-brewed version of the 'National Pastime' - Baseball.
It has no stats, no team or player names, very little in way of technical marvel and your average game can run about 30 minutes. What it did, though, was prove to American audiences that Nintendo was serious about making stuff they wanted, to the point where this little game sold more than 3 million copies worldwide!
So to honor its anniversary and commemorate the start of the 2024 season, we're grabbing our gloves and taking to the ol' ballpark for some 'Baseball'!
