We take a look at an opinion piece from gamesindustry.biz that provides some context for Square-Enix's new shift in direction. The company has had to refocus its efforts after marketing costs and development woes ate substantially into its profits. For example, even though Tomb Raider sold over 3.4 million units when released, it underperformed; this was primarily because of marketing expenses required in a competitive market. Another example is when Final Fantasy took almost 6 years to make, and many found it not worth the wait. Additionally, Final Fantasy XIV had to be rebuilt from SCRATCH after a disastrous initial development.
