St Patrick's Day Afghanistan 17.03.11
In Afghanistan the Royal Irish Regiment and the Irish Guards have begun celebrations in aid of St Patrick's day.
Even the boss of the afghan army, General Sherin Shah was not only sporting the national sprig, he was handing them out, a duty that used to be performed by the Queen Mother.
Shamrocks specially flown from Ireland were handed to all capbadges in the advisory group.
Uniquely both the Army's Irish regiments are in Helmand for their patron saint's day.
However for one Royal Irish, who British Forces News spoke to, today's occasion was muted by the fact that they had just bid farewell to one of their fallen. He stressed that celebrations will be postponed until he was home safely this summer.
Among the visiting dignitaries was a former major in the Ulster Defence Regiment and later a supporter of the Good Friday Agreement.
