The Cave of Trials is the thing that keeps me coming back to Star Ocean 2 again and again. It certainly has its design flaws, and there's plenty to criticize if you're so inclined, but in my opinion it's one of the funnest dungeons in all of RPG history, and the rest of the game is simply warm up for it.

There are lots of ways to look at the Cave of Trials and the role it serves in the game. But largely it's a way to build your party up to the level necessary to fight Indalecio Unlimited. There's so much gear in here that's so much more powerful than anything you've had previously, and a rapid escalation of... well, everything. One thing that I think is amazing is that still to this day, speedrunners who do the 100% category (meaning they must fight Indalecio Unlimited) are forced to beat the Cave of Trials all the way to the end, simply because there is no faster way to become powerful enough for Indalecio. That may change some day, but it means Star Ocean 2 has had a remarkably enduring gameplay arc.

EDIT: There's a minor editing error where the dialog box gets cut off early at 1:24. It wasn't anything important, but it should have continued with "If you start to run low you can Reproduce more on the fly, but a full stock of 20 should be enough."
