Star Ocean 3 Combo Video
And by basic I mean performing combos in a VS. Mode where all characters have 3 move sets that are hot trash compared to setting them yourself in the main game.
In all seriousness, I used to play this game A LOT years ago. I think I put over 100 hours in and I even managed to finish the post game (granted I never went out of my way to get all the battle trophies). This is a video I should have done ages ago, but I never got around to it until now. Below is a Q/A related to the video and the game as a whole.
Q: What exactly is this game?
A: Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is an RPG. I love it a lot, but it does have some issues.
Q: This has a VS. Mode?
A: Yes, but it's not available at the start. Unless you grab a completed save, it'll take a long time to unlock the mode and the characters (and don't get me started on finding the costumes).
Q: How does the game work?
A: All characters have a light and heavy button (you'll see a purple effect during heavy attacks). Holding one of these at either short or long range will perform a skill if your character has one. You can cancel a light attack into a light special, and light specials into heavy specials. Attacking takes up Fury (which is your stamina). It won't go back up until you stand still for a moment, but there are passives that refill it instantly at a random chance. You will automatically block light attacks and light specials if you're at 100% fury, but moving around will keep you at 99% fury.
Q: How do combos work?
A: Doing combos with only one character is rather tame due to the Fury meter and the gameplay itself. Combos that involve 2 or even 3 characters are the most flexible since one character can keep the combo going while the others can briefly regain fury and then follow up.
Q: Are these combos hard? Situational? Consistent?
A: Yes, yes, and sorta. Because I was doing these combos in VS. Mode, I had to perform them in a way where the two characters didn't hit each other. Some of these combos are situational since the enemy can instantly hit the floor if they come in contact with a wall. As for consistency, I'm not sure. There seems to be some auto blocking going on and it happened a few times in this video. Maybe it's based on defense? Don't quote me on this. Also, Pepita's Magic Hook is very strange as it seems to have varying effects (in the video, it caused a re-stand and allowed Adray to act immediately).
Q: Why not just do these combos in the main game?
A: There are a lot of reasons. The number of skills and having 3 characters makes the possibilities overwhelming, the monsters can vary in weight difference (which is important for juggles), but most importantly, the max number of characters you can have is 8. There are 10 characters in the VS. Mode, but because of plot reasons, you'll never have access to all of them in the main game (unless there's a way to swap). Besides, it was more interesting to make the gimped move sets work in VS. Mode.
In any case, thanks for reading this far and I hope you enjoyed the video!
