Star Ocean 5 Combat - Better Than Star Ocean 3?
43Star Ocean 5 Combat is Better Than Star Ocean 3. At least this early in the game.
One of my biggest concerns in this Star Ocean 5 PS4 playthrough coming into Star Ocean Integrity and Faithlessness was the fact that the lead developer wanted to channel the spirit of Star Ocean 3.
It's no mystery that the Star Ocean series houses some of my most favorite RPG games.

Star Ocean 3 is widely regarded as the worst game in the series and for good reason. It's combat is clunky. It's dungeons are confusing and it's exploration is limited.
Fortunately, Star Ocean 5 only used some of the concepts of Star Ocean 3's combat system. Tri-Ace used those concepts as a framework and completely overhauled the execution and implementation.
Star Ocean 5's combat is fluid, fast and you get the impression that your artificial intelligence-controlled teammates really know what they are doing--at least in the early stages of the game
Star Ocean 5 Role System
The role system in Star Ocean 5 is perhaps the biggest change to combat. I'm too early in the game to evaluate it. But, I'm very excited to see just how creatively I can customize my team by giving them different jobs in battle
I've already experimented with changing Victor's role from "Defender" to "Attacker." I did seem to notice that battles become more aggressive and perhaps easier for me in the short term. However, I'll need more time with it playing against stronger enemies to really determine if what I felt was legitimate or not.
Is Combat in Star Ocean 5 Too Easy?
I'm too early in the game to answer this question comprehensively. What I will say is that every Star Ocean game allows you to out-level the difficulty of combat. I think this dynamic is what has most players upset. However, it's one of the things I love most about the series.
