I've argued for many years that Star Ocean The Second Story has the best leveling system in any role playing game ever made. I still hold to that sentiment even now. Today, let's discuss why Star Ocean 5's leveling system is at least just as good and at best, maybe even better than Star Ocean The Second Story.

Star Ocean 5's Leveling System May Be The Best

I've not seen enough of the game to make this a definitive statement yet. But, I can tell you that the spirit of Star Ocean The Second Story is all here with a few extra add-ons to boot.

First, Star Ocean 5 brings back the special abilities menu. This was cut from Star Ocean Till The End of Time and The Last Hope's designs much to my disappointment. In fact, I never fully understood why Tri-Ace removed them.

But what makes this system so good? Simple, the system gives any player a huge incentive to do more than just plod through the story. Now you have a reason to level grind, a reason to harvest, mine and fish for hours on end. That's because doing so will grant you better special abilities that in turn make you a better adventurer and combatant.

What Can You Do With Star Ocean 5's Leveling System?

Star Ocean 5's leveling system allows you to level in two categories. Special Abilities and Roles.

Think of roles like the gambits found in Final Fantasy XII. The difference here is that more roles are learned by leveling the roles you already have. You don't buy them at a shop.

Leveling roles requires the use of Special Points or SP. You get SP by winning fights, mining, harvesting, completing quests and fishing. This is excellent because this system puts the player in a loop where they are incentivized to do all of the above and often should they want to increase their abilities.

The most beautiful part of leveling roles is the fact that the SP required to level them, drops as you master a role in use. That was a genius design dynamic as it saves the player from having to grind endlessly for SP.

Special Abilities are a throwback from Star Ocean 1 & 2. They cover skills like harvesting, fishing, compounding (crafting), and other skills. Leveling these skills grants you more rewards when you actually put the skills to use. Which is also tied to the loop of incentives I mentioned above.

But, Does This Leveling System Alone Make Star Ocean 5 Great?

For me it does. But, you have to always keep in mind that I am extremely different from the average RPG game fan. For starters, the biggest complaint we've discussed about Star Ocean 5 is the story.

Many people are up in arms about how bland the story is. I couldn't care less because I don't play video games to be pulled through a story. I play them to live out my own power fantasies. This is something Star Ocean 5 and other games in the Star Ocean series excel at doing.

So objectively speaking, I'd have to say no. The leveling system being great can't in-and-of-itself make a great game for most players. It can for me because of my preferences, but for the masses, I'd say it's a less important feature.
