Star Ocean Integrity and Faithlessness is no exception to this rule. In fact, Star Ocean 5 handles it much better than it's predecessor, Star Ocean 3 (Till The End of Time) did.

Star Ocean 5 Compounding, Synthesis and Cooking With Welch

Once you have the freedom to move around a bit, I highly suggest that you find Welch's laboratory on the east side of the town of Myiddok.

Once you find her, she will give you a sidequest that will unlock the compounding skill in your special abilities menu. In fact, you will have probably already completed her quest because you should already be carrying blueberries in your pouch.

Star Ocean 3 Crafting Sucked...How is Star Ocean 5 Better?

Simple, there are no ridiculous fail states early in your crafting career. You will be afforded enough material to get your feet wet as a compounding wizard and exploring and battling in the world will grant you the SP (special points) to "purchase" better compounding and synthesis skills.

Overall, Tri-Ace has built a very good economic system in Star Ocean 5. It's one of the dynamics I love about almost all their Star Ocean games. You need XP (experience points) to level and SP (special points) to buy better skills. Then the game presents several options through battle, mining, harvesting and completing sidequest to get these currencies.

So far, I'm still a fan of the game. I think I may need to come to grips with the fact that Star Ocean struggles to get public acceptance because it's design is tailored to be fun and engaging only for weirdos like me who don't really care if the story is awesome (most video game stories suck to me).
