I think its safe to say Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year, as it represents a lot for both gaming sphere, and the film industry. From a movie standpoint this game is the first large piece of star wars entertainment to be released since star wars the last jedi, which in my opinion and millions of others, was not just an insult of star wars, but an insult of film. Even if you liked the film you can’t deny the objective facts that the film was very different from the rest, destroyed luke’s character, broke a ton of star wars in universe physics, and divided the fanbase as much as modern US politics.
In terms of the gaming sphere its no secret EA is in one the worst spots they’ve eve been in. When it was first announced EA was taking over the Star wars license fans were pretty excited as we all thought wed get a good dice battlefront game, another knights of the old republic from Bioware, and other great games from both visceral and respawn. Instead all we’ve gotten is two battlefront games from EA so far in 6 years, and even though I think the second battlefront game is phenomenal now, the fans have been waiting for a story driven single player game. Cue, Star Wars Jedi the fallen order.
This 3rd person action adventure single player experience from Respawn, has some big shoes to fill, and some extremely high expectations set upon it. The first reveal trailer for the game showed an incredibly promising story, and to me was the first time I was generally excited for a Star Wars narrative other than rogue one. Then at EA play this year a demo was shown off finally unveiling the gameplay to the general public and press. Overall the reactions from people were fairly good, with a lot of comments on how great the game’s visuals were, how amazing the traversal looked, and how immersive and visceral the combat seemed. Many commented on how the game’s combat looked similar to something that would be seen in dark souls in terms of how the saber was swung, the blocking of projectiles, and the parrying of swords. Well today the lead combat designer Jason de Haras has reinstated that while the combat will have a heavy focus on parrying and blocking, it won’t be as challenging as the FromSoftware title Dark souls as there won’t be a stamina bar, and the player will also have more agency. Instead the game will play a lot more like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
He stated this in a quote by stating,
“I thought it was pretty badass, and a little comforting to know that you could make this type of game without a stamina bar. They let you attack, they let you roll, they do all this for free – and then the AI will tell you if you’re doing the correct thing. It just confirmed to us that you don’t have to limit everything the player does; let them have a little more agency, and then let the AI give them a slap on the wrist or a punch in the face. It was a positive thing for us to know there was a game that was similar to ours. Very similar.”
Well I’ve never been the best at dark souls I’ll admit, but I still love trying to play those games regardless, and I was actually considerably better at Sekiro, if I’m even pronouncing that correctly, soI am extremely excited that the game will play similar to that game. While the games music and lack of dismemberment has been a massive let down for me, I’m still excited for its world, story, and gameplay. Hopefully with the confirmation of this game’s similarities to Sekiro, the game will have a difficulty mode where we the player die in one or two hits form a blaster or saber. Well that ends this quick news update on Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, and my quick view on it, but I want to know your all’s thoughts as well!
