The moon was a fan-favorite location in Destiny 1 where it was already crawling with the fallen and tons of creepy locations containing the hive, since Destiny 2’s release players have been begging for the moon to return as a primary location, well actually I’d say players have been begging bungie to release all of the locations and areas from Destiny 1 but that’s a topic for another time. Nevertheless, the Moon is returning in Destiny 2’s newest expansion Shadow Keep, and will play a central role in the plot. Until now there hasn’t been too much footage of the moon and information regarding it, but as a 50th year anniversary for the moon landing, bungie has finally released a small new trailer detailing this new location a little more.
From this trailer and video we can see that once again the moon looks absolutely breathtaking as Destiny 2’s visuals and art style never cease to impress, but things look a little different. The moon will now be double the size of what it was in Destiny 1, and Bungie has stated that for a size comparison that we use the Dreadnaught from the Taken king as an example instead of the Tangled shore or Dreaming City from the Forsaken Expansion. Bungie wants the moon to feel familiar to veteran destiny players, but they should also feel as if something has changed. The moon’s accelerator has been destroyed and now a new darkness is here and altering the location.
There will new lost sectors close to previously hidden areas, as well as lost sectors incorporated into old locations that have been updated and changed. Overall bungie has said that this new reimaging of the moon will have a bunch of large and small changes for players to experience and discover on their own, including two massive changes being the fallen’s ship that was seen over the original moon has now been gutted and striped for parts by the fallen as a makeshift base. Apparently the fallen are struggling just to survive at this point in the game due to the new foes and the hive. The next big change is the hive, whom have now constructed the massive Scarlet Fortress which will serve as the centerpiece for this location. While we didn’t get to see inside the fortress, I’m really hoping that we can explore most of this structure and that its not just a hollow background model, or a location that is exclusive to just the raid as it looks incredible and definitely gives off some Mordor vibes.
In terms of story we know we're heading back to the Moon to fight ghosts of battles past that have been dug up by Eris Morn, and we already know some forms of those will include Crota and even Ghaul, here’s hoping though that there are several more cool bosses that have been restructured for us to fight.
All in all this reimaging of the moon looks great and I’m pretty excited to explore it when shadow keep comes out! However, my fanboy glasses haven’t blocked me from seeing as how this area is still more or less half of rehashed Destiny 1 content. So paying for a reimagining of the location will still be very divisive. While I’ll be buying this DLC regardless for the purpose of content creation and reviewing it, I can easily see why some are not as excited as others about this expansion. It certainly sounds like bungie has made an effort to try and make this location feel new and worth the price tag, as they’ve added in a lot of new areas and story missions, as well as new exotics and a plethora of other changes. But I still can’t help but feel, that if Destiny 2 is trying to increase its player base again, and is moving more into.....
