Part 3. This was one of those games that I could never beat as a kid. I played this a bunch and remember just small bits and pieces of it. The thing that always stuck with me was the letter that you dipped in water to get the code. It was such a cool gimmick, it's a shame I couldn't find it. The game is a bit rough around the edges and hasn't aged all that gracefully, but that doesn't mean the game isn't fun. Movement is a bit clunky, you cannot jump and move forward, which is weird. The nice thing is that you are guaranteed to land where you jump and can rotate to attack enemies while in air. You can also rotate in place which is kinda nice and means when you want to face an enemy you won't walk into them and can attack easily. The downside is enemies can move in directions you can't and are faster than you which is tough. There is lots of platforming, tough jumps and hard bosses. Late game there are some rooms and areas where it seems impossible to avoid damage because enemies are dropping on your head and lots of projectiles. There are a bunch of different weapons and they are all fun and unique. The only downside is that when you die all healing items and additional weapons are removed and you begin with just 3 hearts. It can be brutal at times, but is certainly rewarding when you win. It's for sure Nintendo hard. The best part of the game is the bosses and they are all fun to fight. I did however despise the final level. The final boss is fine but the approach to him is abysmal. Not to forget that the music is great. There is one song played late game in a tomb with an organ that is just wonderful. I'm glad I beat this but the last area was enough to spoil most of the fun that I had in the rest of the game. It's a good game heavily marred by a less than stellar finish. The game does ooze charm and for that I am grateful. Enjoy my semi-blind playthrough.
