Steam Deck - I Made a Little Game in Unreal Engine 5 and Put It On My Steam Deck
DISCLAIMER: None of these assets are my own, and are part of the "An Hour of Code in Unreal" and "Unreal Learning Kit" projects on the Unreal Marketplace, which can be downloaded for free. If you want to partake in this course yourself, it is also free, and is a series of 5 one hour videos with supporting documentation. There is also a teacher's kit for those who would like to adapt this course to teach their own students. You can find the course here:

So yeah, I'm making my first steps into Unreal Engine 5. I've really wanted to start learning a game engine for a long time to go along with the work I've done to learn Blender in the past, but have struggled to find the time. While I am still quite busy with work at the moment, and the DFFOO content I upload too, both of these things should be ramping down for me soon so I will have more time for this. I may even upload progress updates on any serious projects I start.
For now though, this was just a short course to get familiar with Blueprints, which is the visual coding language for Unreal. I am pretty familiar with using Node based coding in Blender and even Davinci Resolve, so it seems up my alley. It will be a while before I can make anything really cool completely of my own design but I'm excited to learn.
As a nice little extra bookend to the course I did, I decided to try running the packaged game on my Steam Deck as a Windows .exe and running it through Proton. It actually worked surprisingly well. For some reason though, playing on my monitor for this video lost me 10 FPS compared to playing on my Steam Deck's screen, despite the resolution being slightly lower. I didn't exactly optimise this in any way, so oddities like that aren't surprising!
I'll certainly be checking how any other projects I make run on my Steam Deck in the future, and may even look into packaging native Linux versions to see how that compares.
