STEAM DROPS SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS 7, 8, AND 8.1 IN 2024: HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Valve has released a new Steam Beta Client update to fix bugs and add new features, but along with the update, they also announced that they would no longer support Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 starting January 1, 2024. The support for Windows 7 ended officially on January 13, 2015, but Microsoft extended it until January 14, 2020. Meanwhile, Windows 8.1 support ended on January 9, 2018, and its upgrade support expired on January 10, 2023. Valve's decision to drop support for these older Windows versions is mainly due to the newest features in Steam that rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which is no longer functional on older versions of Windows. Additionally, future versions of Steam will require Windows features and security updates that are only present in Windows 10 and above.
