Stonekeep performance test on Steam Deck [GOG version] Old-school gaming at hand!
There is a lot of videos on YT with various games tested on Steam Deck. Most of them present the footage of the screen and how the game looks ON Steam Deck. Some people, however, use their Steam Deck as a desktop PC or a regular console. My tests intend to show how the game looks and performs on an external screen, in full HD (not in 4k for performance reasons) with certain scaling options.
NOTE: Okay, it was supposed to be a "quick" test but I got a little bit carried away and wanted to complete the entire floor before cutting the video and it took me a while, especially I took my sweet time with the two elites in the last room, because I was dumb and tried inefficient tactics instead of killing them with bombs at a melee distance...
NOTE: I used the Steam Deck's scaling option called "Pixel" which in my opinion works really well for retro games.
Stonekeep was probably the first actual good ol' dungeon crawler I ever played in my life. For me, it was a unique experience and even though this game is very approachable for newbies (auto-map, stable difficulty) I still found it very difficult and never actually completed it (I got bored with the claustrophobic setting after like two or three sessions). Little did I know about the variety later on in the game and in dungeon crawlers in general. However, I really intend to play through the entire game, now when I'm interested in retro and pretty tired of modern tripe As. I tested it on Steam Deck and it works fantastic. I played the GoG version of the game through a special launcher called Hero Launcher. To me, a person who wants to record his gameplays, it's a fantastic option, because I can get a clear video output in full HD without any struggles with the resolution compatibility of my capture device or software. How the game plays after all these years (about 15 from my first attempt) - it's great and the settings options of the Steam Deck let you set everything to your liking. And since the game does not require many buttons apart from the basic "move" and "attack", it's very convenient as well. If you are looking for the right door to enter the world of old Dungeon Crawlers, Stonekeep is your pick.
NOTE: Bear in mind that this is recorded in the docked mode, meaning the performance might always be a bit lower than in the regular handheld mode due to the scaling, etc.
