A quick performance test of Death and Request on Steam Deck OLED It works but needs some tinkering
There is a lot of videos on YT with various games tested on Steam Deck. Most of them present the footage of the screen and how the game looks ON Steam Deck. Some people, however, use their Steam Deck as a desktop PC or a regular console. My tests intend to show how the game looks and performs on an external screen, in full HD (not in 4k for performance reasons) with certain scaling options.
Okay, here is a game that really takes some effort to run on Steam Deck. Death and Request is a game by Idea Factory, a company known for the Neptunia series, with many, many other JRPGs in their portfolio. At first glance, the main selling point of the game is pretty obvious: a JRPG with cure anime protagonists. The setting looked pretty grim though, so I decided to buy the game at a huge discount. To my surprise, the plot is built around the development of an MMORPG game (something like Sword Art Online) and the mysterious disappearance of one of the developers (the main protagonist who lost her memory). Also to my surprise, once I finally got to the gameplay after like ten minutes of cutscenes, it appeared that the game works like crap. The performance was very low, making it completely impossible to play the game. After some googling, I learned that the game has some resolution scaling issues: no matter what you choose in the settings, the game always runs in FHD and then scales down to the resolution set in the Steam Deck. I tried many solutions found all over the Internet but none of them worked individually or perfectly. After lots of try and error, I finally got the game running (wish some hiccups). All of the settings and solutions are listed in my comment pinned to this video.
NOTE: Bear in mind that this is recorded in the docked mode, meaning the performance might always be a bit lower than in the regular handheld mode due to the scaling, etc.
