A new look at the King's Field and Lunacid inspired soulslike Verho on Steam Deck Part 3/3
If you are looking for a more approachable souls-like resembling the early projects of the creator of the genre, you should follow the progress on this indie project. The game is still in development, but you can already add it to your wishilst on the Steam page of the game:

NOTE: This is the new sneak peak into the progress in the development of this title. Since the last playthrough, the dev added a ton of new areas and features which will later on form the playable demo for the players to check the game out on Steam.
NOTE 2: It turns out that I completed the locations in the wrong order. The Old Temple is supposed to be cleared later on in the game, but I finished it in Part 2. That is why I breezed through the locations in this Part 3 and killed the boss at my second attempt. Still, I think the pacing of the game is really well-balanced for a souls game and it will be a great game for people new to the genre (and retro games), way better than an attempt at beating an actual King's Field game :P
There is a high chance you heard of From Software or at least know what "Dark Souls" is. Maybe you are even familiar with the genre called souls-like. But have you ever come across the actual first games developed by From Software? If yes, have you actually tried playing them? I did. As far as they are unique experience and a good way to check out the humble beginnings of one of today's most appreciated developers, they deviate from modern standards and can be too frustrating even for the most hardcore fans. The (actual) first King's Field was one of the first games released for PS1 after all, way back in 1994.
However, as soon as I learned about the precursor of Dark Souls, I also learned about an ongoing project of a game inspired by early From Software games - it kept the original style but with more approachable (yet still difficult and old-school) mechanics. Thanks to the kindness of the developer, I present to you Verho, where you take the role of a brave adventurer who travels to Yardin - a desolated country that is said to have been the source of catastrophic events that befell the humanity several centuries before.
That is the story, but what about the game itself? If you played the early or even the later FS games, you should immediately feel at home - eerie atmosphere, mysterious NPCs, environmental storytelling, challenging and unforgiving combat, shortcuts, optional locations, lots of items the use of which remains a mystery until you... well, use them - that is Verho in a nutshell. And you gotta love the general PS1 style of the game.
