Nathan "Nate" Drake and his brother, Samuel "Sam" Drake, are treasure hunters who find themselves in a stormy situation while fighting off armed thugs in boats. The two were searching for the infamous pirate Henry Avery, who is known for having the largest heist in history, worth 400 million dollars, in the 1600s. Along with wealthy treasure hunter Rafe Adler, they sneak into a Panama jail where Avery's first mate was hanged. The corrupt Warden Vargas helps them, but upon discovering that they are searching for Avery's treasure, he demands a cut. Nate eventually finds a clue in the form of a crucifix, but keeps it a secret from Vargas. When the trio meets to discuss their next move, they realize that they must go to Scotland. However, their plans are interrupted when they are caught by Gustavo and the guards. Vargas, who has been stabbed to death by Rafe, is found in his office. In the chaos, Sam is assumed to have been killed, causing Nate to give up the search. Rafe, however, continues on to the Saint Dismas Cathedral in Scotland alone.
