Played through at the highest difficult level with Ryu. No losses.
The Street Fighter EX spin-off series is one that was pretty polarizing. It marked the series' first foray into real-time 3D graphics (though they didn't do much with the third dimension itself from a gameplay standpoint), and the developer Arika introduced a slew of new characters to the Street Fighter stable. It plays very similarly to the Capcom-developed games in the main series, but does introduce a few new important concepts - it changes how the Super moves work (the power is no longer dependent on the level the bar is charged to), and introduce guard crushes. It also features a heavier emphasis on canceling moves into other moves to produce combos - some of the more epic super combos require them. It still feels like SF2, but these fairly subtle alterations do meaningfully alter the flow of the game.
The sequels were huge improvements over this (which itself is a port of the 'updated' arcade version of EX, hence the 'Plus α'), but though the iterative improvements made in each game after are (naturally) nowhere to be found here, EX+α is still a fun game that deserves a fair try.
My only real criticism is of some of these new characters. Why would you call a guy in Halloween pajamas Skullomania? Doesn't it seem like someone was gunning for the worst possible name there? And some of these portraits are pretty terrible. Why does Ken look like he's about to commit some act of sexual assault? That leer is terrifying!
