Samurai Shodown: Warrior's Rage (PS1) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of SNK's 2000 versus-fighter for the Sony PlayStation, Samurai Shodown: Warrior's Rage.
Played through the story mode on the default settings with Yaci Izanagi.
Despite the name and look, Warrior's Rage is not directly connected to the Hyper Neo Geo 64 arcade title. Rather, it is an original title developed for the PlayStation. It is also not 3D in its gameplay, no matter how the graphics are being rendered (the only move that uses the third dimension at all is the dodge). It does animate far more smoothly than the ports of other SS games on the PS1, mainly because 3D characters are far easier than the burden of 2D sprite frames on the PS1's limited memory.
I'm on the fence with this game. I love Samurai Shodown, and this is certainly a competent fighter, but it doesn't really feel like Samurai Shodown. The heavy strikes feel a lot less impactful, and the game plays a bit on the fast side, seemingly discouraging the methodical and slow-paced design of the main series' arcade 2D titles. It's fun, no doubt, but don't look for a throwback to the classic series here.
The music is great, though, and the CG cinemas are really well done. The graphics are also extremely smooth - probably why they are simple looking in design - and the balance struck between fluidity and detail is a good one.
Overall, as a late-gen PS1 fighter, I absolutely give it a thumbs up. As a SS title, not so much.
