"GO GO MARIO!!" Official Single (3/1986, English Subtitles) - NintendoComplete
This incredibly odd bit of official Mario history was an officially licensed single based on the Super Mario Bros. theme song. The original video is titled "マリオの大冒険," or Mario's Big Adventure.
The song itself is named "GO GO MARIO!!" (GO GO マリオ!!), and predates the vocaloid and big-band versions by decades.
The famous Japanese talk show, All Night Nippon (オールナイトニッポン), held a contest that asked listeners to mail-in their own lyrics written to the tune of the Super Mario Bros. theme song. A winner was selected, and a single was produced and sold on vinyl. The album did have an original B-side song about Koopa Troopas, but it sucked.
This video shows the original song's video for TV with two sets of subtitles overlaid: on the top is my personal translation of the lyrics, and on the bottom is a romanization of the original lyrics for you karaoke-ing sing-a-long fiends out there. I don't recall how I got this video - I'm guessing it was probably from a Japanese forum link. I've had the video kicking around on my computer for years now, so I don't really know how to trace it back to its source to give credit. Sorry about that! :/
The song was re-done and re-released a couple of years ago for Japanese Wii/WiiU/3DS systems through the Joysound karaoke app, and it was also made available on compatible machines in karaoke bars across Japan. It had an entirely different video, and was released to help fuel hype for the launch of Super Mario Maker on Wii U.
The original video, as I'm sure you can tell, was of pretty poor quality having been pulled from an ancient VHS recording. Hours and hours of editing and layering filtered passes across the image later, it is now far sharper and cleaner looking than my original source video (even though, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't sufficiently filter horrible color bleed - argh!). I had to eventually concede that things only get so good at its age. It's certainly watchable.
I added in the border from SMB2 to try to hide the bad color distortion and warping around the edges, and I think it did the job pretty well.
I also translated the lyrics and subtitled the video in both English and romanized Japanese, but you probably noticed that already.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy this. It's bizarre as anything, and the song isn't very good, but it is very funny in a campy, kitschy kind of way!
