Street Fighter II: The World Warrior is a competitive fighting game developed by Capcom and originally released for arcade systems in 1991. It is the second installment in the Street Fighter series and the sequel to Street Fighter, released in 1987. It is Capcom's fourteenth title to use the CP System arcade system board. Street Fighter II improved many of the concepts introduced in the first game, including the use of special command-based moves and a six-button configuration, while offering players a wider selection of playable characters, each with their own fighting style, and introducing the combo system.

Street Fighter II became the best-selling title since the golden age of arcade gaming. By 1993, two years after its launch, sales were over $1.5 billion in gross revenue, and by 1994, the game had been played by over 25 million people in the United States at home and in arcades. In 1995, total sales of Street Fighter II and Street Fighter II: Championship Edition machines exceeded $2.312 billion. Adjusted for inflation, it is estimated that all versions of Street Fighter II exceed $10 billion in revenue, making it one of the highest-grossing video games of all time. In particular, the SNES version sold over 6.3 million copies, making it Capcom's bestselling game for the next two decades and their bestselling game on a single platform. Due to its success, a series of updated versions offering additional features and characters has been released. Street Fighter II is regarded as one of the best video games of all time, and in particular the most important and influential fighting game made. Its launch is seen as a revolutionary moment within its genre; it is credited with popularizing the fighting genre during the 1990s, inspiring other producers to create their own fighting series, and sparking a renaissance for the arcade video game industry.

스트리트 파이터 2

캡콤에서 제작하여 1991년에 출시한 스트리트 파이터 시리즈의 2번째 작품으로 부제는 더 월드 워리어(The World Warrior). 프로듀서는 후나미즈 노리타카 / 디렉터는 니시타니 아키라. 한국에서는 스파2, 영어권에서는 SF2, 일본에서는 ストⅡ(스트2)라는 약칭으로 불린다.

스트리트 파이터 2 시리즈 중에서 가장 먼저 만들어진 작품으로, 사실상 스트리트 파이터 시리즈의 본격적인 시작이라 할 수 있는 작품이다. 아케이드판의 플랫폼은 CPS1 기판.

대전액션게임이라는 장르를 아케이드 최고의 인기 장르로 만들었으며, 이를 넘어 아예 아케이드의 패러다임을 바꿨다는 평마저 듣는 그야말로 전설적인 작품이다. 단지 이 게임 하나로 인해 전세계 거의 모든 게임 개발 회사들이 너도나도 대전 격투 게임을 만들어대는 현상까지 발생했으며 그걸로 끝도 아니고 심지어는 영화제작자나 만화가들까지 이 작품을 너도나도 따라하는 현상마저 발생했다. 1991년에 처음 등장했지만, 이후 후속작들, 심지어 2016년에 발매된 스트리트 파이터 5의 외형에까지 직접적으로 영향을 줄 정도로 지속적인 영향력을 자랑한다.

본작은 BGM도 평가가 좋기로 유명한데, 이는 당시 캡콤에 재직 중이었던 시모무라 요코의 작품이다. 시리즈가 5편까지 이어지고 있지만, 각 캐릭터 테마곡은 이때 결정된 것이 지금까지 이어져 오고 있다. 사실상 모든 곡이 유명하다고 할 수 있지만 그 중에서도 특히 류와 켄, 가일 등의 테마곡이 유명하다.[ 단 달심과 사가트 스테이지의 BGM만은 시모무라 요코가 직접 작곡하지 않았으며, 그래서인지 이 두 캐릭터의 BGM은 조금 다른 캐릭터보다는 귀에 덜 붙는 느낌이 있다.

발매된지 20년이 넘은 현재에도 국내 몇몇 오락실에선 아직도 현역으로 돌고 있으며 원산지인 일본 역시 마찬가지인 듯. 심지어 가끔 대회도 열리는 모양. 매년 샌프란시스코에서 열리는 Google I/O 2015에서는 행사장 2층 가운데에 스트리트 파이터 2 오리지날 아케이드 게임기를 설치하여 많은 개발자들의 향수를 자극했다는 에피소드도 있었을 정도로 이 게임이 비디오 게임 문화에서 차지하는 역사적 의미는 그만큼 크다고 할 것이다.
