This is a playthrough using Evil Ryu in the Saturn version of Street Fighter Zero 2. Read on for more information...

Evil Ryu is a hidden character in this game. He is a hidden playable character.

===== HOW TO SELECT EVIL RYU =====

There are two methods to do it, as follows:

On the character select screen, do the following:

Highlight Ryu, hold [START] and press Right, Up, Down, Left. You will end up back on Ryu, now just press any attack button to select Evil Ryu. (remember to keep [START] held down at all times)

Alternatively, it can also be done this way: Highlight Ryu, press [START] once, and press Right, Up, Down, Left. You will end up back on Ryu, now hold [START] and press any attack button to select Evil Ryu.

Once you've "unlocked" him by using either of the above methods, he can then be accessed on the Versus Mode character select screen by highlighting Ryu, holding [START] and pressing any attack button to select.

===== ABOUT EVIL RYU =====

This is basically Ryu when consumed by the Satsui no Hado, effectively making him 'evil'. Skin being darker tanned and having darker coloured clothing seems to be a requirement when being "evil" in a lot of fighting games.

Evil Ryu first appeared in the USA arcade version of vanilla SFA2 as a palette-swap hidden character. Basically, Capcom USA added him in to put more secrets into the game, as the Mortal Kombat series at the time (MK2 and MK3) popularized the trend of hidden characters. Evil Ryu then went on to become a famous staple alternative version of him in the future SF games.

It should be noted that Evil Ryu has a proper ending only in the Japanese version of the game (SFZ2), as this video shows. In the USA and EUR versions, he has regular Ryu's story, dialogues and endings.

Gameplay-wise, Evil Ryu is so good in this game... it's almost unfair on what he has at his disposal as a shoto character. Just think regular Ryu with some of Akuma's best moves and you have Evil Ryu. He is my favorite character to use in SFA2 (the versions where he is in).

===== ADDITIONAL INFORMATION =====

---- Evil Ryu does not appear anywhere as a CPU opponent in the game.

---- As Evil Ryu has a proper ending in the Japanese version of the game, his dialogues with his Mid-Boss and Final Boss should be unique as well. I cannot confirm this though.

---- Despite him being known as Evil Ryu, his name is still just Ryu in the game.

---- His hidden mid-boss is Sakura.

---- His personal final boss in the game is Akuma.

---- In the Saturn version of the game, he has some missing or incorrectly animated super move "starting up" effects when he performs most of his super combos.

---- His colour palettes for his karate outfit are identical to regular Akuma's.

---- His pre-fight intro is different to regular Ryu's.

---- Regarding his regular fireball, the startup of the projectile burns. This means that if he hits you with the fireball close up (as soon as it comes out), you are set alight.

---- As well as having all of regular Ryu's moves, he also has a Teleport, a Super Dragon Punch and the Raging Demon.

---- Sakura's stage BGM is different (better in my view) than the one she has in the PS1 version of the game.

---- The game is known as Street Fighter Zero 2 in Japan.

===== ABOUT SATURN SFA2 =====

In the days of the PS1 and Saturn era, this was considered to be the best port of the game and the closest to the Arcade version. Excluding the loading times (which are faster than the PS1 version), the Saturn port still suffers from animations frames being cut out for certain characters like Zangief and Gen, and specific sound effects being muffled. These elements are rectified when you play mirror matches, because that way the VRAM and Audio RAM are freed up by having to store only one character's data, meaning that the free memory can be used for the full animation frames and clearer sound effects.

Additionally, the Saturn version of the game is rather unique, as it is kind of an "in-between" of the arcade USA SFA2 and Japanese SFZ2A. This means that it has the secret characters from arcade USA SFA2, and some play modes from Japanese SFZ2A (which would normally be common console play modes like Survival Mode). This port also allows players to select from all 6 colour palettes for a character regardless of which mode (Manual or Auto) he/she is in - each colour is assigned to each of the 6 attack buttons.
