Streets of Rage 3 (US Ver.): Stage 2 (Axel, "Normal")
Skate’s dialogue was completely changed from the Japanese version, more than Zan and Blaze’s lines. It’s really vague what no one told him, but maybe it has something to do with Shiva he ran away. Skate was originally a lot more pissed and sweary when Shiva fled.
In the Japanese version, it was Zan that lead the team towards their next destination in the shopping district, but in this version, it’s Blaze instead.
Stage 2 is pretty much Streets of Rage 3’s take on the first level you’d see in both 1 and 2. The biggest difference is that it’s music is much MUCH more hardcore.
By the way, I like this game’s soundtrack. It’s way different from the first two games’, but it’s not that bad. Motohiro Kawashima made a lot more tracks in the game compared to 2, but Yuzo Koshiro has some tracks here, too, and even they feel different from his 1 and 2 music.
----------
Moving on, when Stage 2 started, I gained a star on my health bar. This upgrades your B special, and you can have up to 3 stars. You lose a star each time you die. With 1 star, Axel’s Grand Upper/Bare Knuckle attack goes further.
After going halfway through the first part of this level, you’ll fight a tamer named Bruce, and Roo, his kangaroo. If you can beat Bruce first before Roo, Roo will run away, and then he’ll become playable after you use a Continue.
----------
Let’s talk more censorship. The Electra enemies are back, and now there are also Soozie enemies. Both of these kind of female punks were more scantily clad in the Japanese version, and the Soozies has sexier animations where the have their hands on their hips instead of putting their arms up for a fight. When the second part of this level starts, they swing their hips harder to the music instead of dancing with their arms.
But whatever! A censored female punk is still a female punk! Smack some sense into those thots and put them in their place!
(Sorry... I always wanted to say that appropriately...)
----------
The third part of this level is in a bar, and you’re greeted with the return of the infamous Mona and Lisa twins! They’re still annoying as ever with all of their jumping around, and they have a new power to attack you with shockwave. This shockwave attack is even stronger when they use it together.
This is way dodge rolling is a must. Eventually, I took both of them down. Also, they look much different now, no longer looking like a recolored Blaze.
----------
After beating the twins, the Bare Knuckle Brawlers see a news report that states that Axel kidnapped the Chief of Police. But how can this be? Axel hasn’t seen him in ages!
The heroes were given a note from the sky that tells them to investigate the construction site over this confusion, as the news reporter said that that was where Axel was last seen with the Chief. To not do so will likely mean more bomb threats for the city.
