I love the scrolling beat em ups and Streets of Rage is one of my favourites alongside Golden Axe on the Sega Mega Drive. Now growing up I have my Master System and I really wanted this game because of how much I enjoyed the classic 16 bit original.

Unfortunately Sega messed up the port a little, its true that all three fighters - Adam, Axel and Blaze are present, along with all of their signature moves and the awesome fire-bombing police backup and all of the stages. It lacks something in the game play. The controls map well to the 2 button Master System controller and is enjoyable in spells, however you soon realise the game's problem in the first stage.

For starters the 2 player mode, like most Master System games has gone. Secondly at most you'll only have to contend with 2 enemies at a time and they are always the same type. Now I understand that it can't replicate the Mega Drive in terms of numbers of sprites on the screen, but with only 2 enemies to fight the game becomes a lot easier and less challenging. Furthermore games like Renegade and Golden Axe have three combatants trying to kill you at one and Double Dragon goes one step further having this and a 2 player mode - these are all Master system games so there's no excuse.

It's even odder than the Sega Game Gear version, of which is considered a very similiar piece of hardware had a completely different port. Gone are a couple 3 of the levels, along with Adam; but this version retains a 2 player mode and has up to 3 enemies on screen at one time. What the heck happened here? It's not necessarily a bad game, however it is very disappointing, there are better beat em ups on the 8-bit Sega.

If you're interested in seeing more Sega Master System videos then feel free to subscribe or check out my playlists, I also do lots of other consoles.
