1943: The Battle of Midway - Atari ST (Full Playthrough / Let's Play)
1943: The Battle of Midway was a very cool Capcom arcade game from the 80's that was ported across to the Atari ST as well as a bunch of other platforms later in that decade.
It's a simple overhead shooter where you pilot of an American P-38 lightning as you fend off the threat of the Japanese air fleet and navy during World War Two. The eventual goal is to take down the powerful Japanese battleshup Yamato, which wasn't sunk until 1945, so maybe the name of the title is a little wrong? Or we're just going to re-write history.
Overall its a fast and furious shooter that will require you to move around a lot in order to avoid the loop de looping enemies and large boss sprites. It's not overly spectacular grpahically, but it does a good job in remaining smooth and colourful, despite the backgrounds essentially repeating over and over again. It also plays very well with the joystick, however your special attack is mapped to the space key, which isn't ideal but there's not a lot that they good have done with the constraints on offer.
My only real fault with the game is the length. Now the arcade original may take you around 40 minutes to complete. This one I beat in under 10 minutes. It doesn't even loop afterwards, it's just game over and you have to start from the beginning. So no this port is a little far off arcade perfect.
So overall 1943 is a mixed bag, it's enjoyable whilst it lasts, but you just won't be playing it for that long.
