In all industries, people discuss the power of open source and open collaboration. But how does this really work in practice? Who does the actual work and who pays for it? Why and how do stakeholders invest into open source projects and how do they convince others to do the same. Finally, how can even competing companies work together in an open way? Join this talk, we will provide you with the answers based on real world examples and success stories!

The Eclipse Cloud Dev Tools ecosystem is about creating the next generation of web-based tool frameworks at Eclipse including projects such as Eclipse Theia, Eclipse GLSP and OpenVSX. Besides technological innovation, it also brings open source collaboration to a new level. In the past few years, an astounding number of successful initiatives and collaborations have led to great results. Sometimes driven by single stakeholders, often resulting from fruitful collaborations of several organizations. In this talk, we will tell these striking stories including:

Eclipse Theia improvements, such as the completion of the VS Code API, detachable views, Theia Blueprint and better documentation
New projects, such as CDT Cloud
Knowledge exchange and collaboration groups such as the CDT Cloud special interest group
Various strategic contributions to projects such as Eclipse GLSP
We will highlight best practices and patterns that proved to work well in open source ecosystems and provide a guideline on when and how to invest into open source. Finally, we will discuss successful blueprints for open collaboration.

Join this talk to learn how to get the best out of the open source ecosystem and make your next open source investment count!
