Wacah Chan is a Mayan word for the world tree which in their view represents the milky way galaxy. In Mayan mythos the world tree or Wacah Chan was the first creation in the universe and everything emanated from it and continues to do so. A ceiba tree is often depicted as the representative form of this concept, sometimes with a caiman as it's trunk mimicking the scaled spikes of the tree. The world tree connects the three universes of the heavens, earth and underworld. The vision serpent sits atop the world tree which created the center axis which communicates between the earthly and spirit realms. This axis mundi represented by a sacred ceiba tree was a way for the dead and the gods to travel between the worlds. The world tree is including in the creation story of many early civilizations across the world completely independent of each other.
