I've found a number of little issues with my custom controls and remapping menu. Thankfully, I've found a great solution for all of them.

Input is a phenomenal input/controls manager for Game Maker Studio 2 by JujuAdams and Alynne that is compatible with pretty much every controller under the sun, eliminates every issue you've ever had with getting your controls to work, and it's extremely easy to use. It's pretty wild stuff. It literally just works! While it's been a little awkward shoving an entirely new control system into a game that's already almost done (let alone a four player drop-in/drop-out co-op platformer), it's still been far easier than I expected.

Input's creators have also been very helpful with tips for making good multiplayer design choices, mainly the kinds that would actually help a game pass console certification. Based on that I've reworked multiplayer a tiny bit. Player 1 no longer necessarily controls the entire game--there is now a "leader" which defaults to player 1, but will shift up to the next available player if player 1 disconnects. The leader has a little crown icon below their head on the HUD. Speaking of disconnecting, if no players are in, or someone's gamepad loses connection, a window will pop up and let anyone rejoin. The leader can close this window at any time.

I have to redo visual control prompts and remapping now, but I have a decent idea on how to do that now.
