An all-time classic and one of the most influential games of all-time. It's a game that if I was a professor of a game design case studies class, I would definitely have a portion of the curriculum dedicated to its study. All of the basics of 2D gaming are mastered here, yet not much else is offered. Over time, it's become one of the best shallow experiences in gaming, with the increased complexity for the game often created via speed-run contests, etc.
It's a game that everyone likes, but it lacks the depth in gameplay and story to list it as one of the best games of all-time. Most important? Yes. Most accessible? Yes. Damn good? Yes. Top 10 or 20 of all-time, including every platform? No.
If for some strange reason you have never played this game, definitely check it out.
As for multiplayer, it's 2 player alternating and it's quite a fun game to watch others play! Through speedrunning and romhacks, this game lives on with unique content, experiences, and challenges.
