13The creator of Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars has shown enthusiasm for crafting a sequel. Recently, Nintendo released a remake of Super Mario RPG on the Nintendo Switch, which has garnered significant popularity. As many fans revisit this classic that originally debuted in 1996, the game's original director has expressed a keen interest in developing a sequel as his final career project.
In an interview with MinnMax, director Chihiro Fujioka revealed his ongoing aspiration to produce a sequel to Super Mario RPG. Fujioka, who also contributed to the development of Nintendo's Mario & Luigi RPG series, stated his preference for creating another RPG focused solely on Mario. He hinted at having potential ideas for the narrative of this proposed sequel.
Fujioka stated, "Throughout my career, I've worked on numerous games, and I'd really love for my final project to be another Mario RPG, if possible. While I think the Mario & Luigi series is great, my aspiration is to return to crafting a Mario-centric RPG."
The fate of a potential Super Mario RPG 2 may hinge on the success of the original game's recent remake. Video game companies often release remasters or remakes to measure interest in a franchise before deciding to invest in a new installment. Therefore, if the Super Mario RPG remake achieves strong sales on the Switch, it could prompt Nintendo to consider commissioning Fujioka for the sequel. Conversely, if the remake doesn't perform well, Nintendo might decide not to revive this series.
