Oh hey, the idea of countering physical attacks is around, and it applies with not only the Smilaxes, but Megasmilax herself, even if it's just sometimes doing their own physical attacks. If it was around before Princess's healing was a thing, then more people would at least notice. Alas, even MarioWiki failed to notice. (Oh, and thank you, MarioWiki, for letting me know that Megasmilax is female, even if I don't know your source for MS's gender.)

By the way, Megasmilax and her subordinates are vulnerable to Ice. A shame that same logic provided kindly by Pokemon doesn't apply to all plant enemies in Super Mario RPG, but at least now you know. I swear, a few more added elemental weaknesses here and there would help improve Specials' usability.

Anyway, MS is notable for one thing: Petal Blast. This is an attack that we will come to see from 5 bosses, and it stands out not just because of the all-hitting 40 Magic Power attack, but because it also attempts to inflict Mushroom, which suffice to say is why I have full protection at the cost of one of my characters being vulnerable to the Smilaxes' Pollen Nap. MS uses it right away upon spawning herself, and then every 4 rounds after. She can also use Scarecrow Dust sometimes, particularly showcasing why I detest having to equip against Mushroom, the result of the Trueform Pin blocking the Scarecrow debuff and denying me any challenge from directly overcoming the Scarecrow debuff in its unique point of interest.

If you're wondering about the Mushroom debuff, it restores 10% of your current HP, similar to Poison knocking off that much. Note that I say CURRENT. Yeah, all I can say is, who thought that making the percentage so low with current HP used was a bright idea? Bosses in general at this point are already immune to Poison with some exceptions here and there, and Mushroom is by and far the most debilitating debuff to our people when at least with Sleep, we can certainly bait the Smilaxes' counterattacks into hitting the character in dreamland.

(sigh) So onto the Vinery, which is guarded by Birdies, who are revealed by Thought Peek to detest somebody named Valentina, the same person mentioned by Beezo when he was watering MS. Interesting. Anyway, the Birdies actually can randomly get "stunned" (actually confused) when hit by Specials, so rather than a punishment for milking the Attack command, we get a reward for using the Special command for actual attacking. It helps that the Heavy Troopas who sometimes accommodate these disgruntled patrols also has significantly less Magic DEF than Physical DEF, so we do get going on chipping Heavy Troopas down to size a bit with something like Thunderbolt. Of course, to begin with, Heavy Troopas with their attacking every 2 turns involve burst damage, and while they involve only a 1x multiplier, they do have 160 Physical ATK, more than any enemy in this region (but not the 2nd highest of any regular battle mook in the game, despite the factual inaccuracy here working off of the list of mooks having higher Physical ATK being short enough), so the game's subtraction defense keeps even Bowser from taking any particularly light base damage from them. Since they're still weak to something (Jump) even if I don't show as much, I wouldn't be surprised if they became a particular target of buffing in the remaster to make them the legitimate threat that they should be.

Oh yeah, and I have to pay my respects to that one vine that makes it clear that either it needs to easier to grab and not lose grip on, or the Rare Scarf needs to get a buff and I think it should anyway.
