Super Noah's Ark 3D (SNES) Playthrough
A playthrough of Wisdom Tree's 1994 unlicensed first-person shooter for the Super Nintendo, Super Noah's Ark 3D.
Played through on the normal level. From 3:48:10, I show the two secret levels.
Wisdom Tree's Super Noah's Ark 3D holds the distinction of being the only unlicensed SNES game to be sold in the United States during the system's commercial life. Apparently, Wisdom Tree offered id Software a handsome chunk of change to license the engine used in Wolfenstein 3D ( • Wolfenstein 3D (SNES) Playthrough ), and John Romero was amused at the idea of it being used to make a religious first-person shooter, so a deal was struck. Stranger yet, the game that ultimately became Super Noah's Ark 3D was originally intended to be an NES FPS based on Hellraiser. I would've loved to have seen that.
However, that's not to say that Super Noah's Ark 3D lacks its own sense of horror. With a cataclysmic flood underway, the animals on the ark have collectively decided to take the upper hand and savagely dispose of their captor. You, as said captor, have to comb the decks, pelting any animals you come across with food until they've been "put to sleep." I wonder if the creators ever considered the many ways such a premise could be read. The look in the eyes of that poor ostrich on the title screen says it all, I think.
The game is essentially a Nazi-free redux of Wolfenstein 3D that runs at a sputtery framerate and tosses in a fun assortment of public domain sound effects. Playing it makes me feel like I've stumbled into a homebrew hack of the Windows 95 hallway screensaver.
Super Noah's Ark 3D felt like a perfect pick for a Christmas playthrough, and I hope you guys get a kick out of this look at such an incredibly weird game.
Merry Christmas, everybody!
