Terminator 2: Judgment Day (NES) Playthrough
A playthrough of LJN's 1992 license-based action game for the NES, Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Between its sci-fi plot and its action-filled set-pieces, Terminator 2: Judgment Day was seemingly the perfect movie to base an epic video game on, and while it can be fairly argued that none of the T2 games ever lived up to their potential, some fared much better than others. The NES version - a platformer/beat 'em up developed by Software Creations - was one of the better games in the line-up.
The game features five stages that are loosely based on the events of the film. You begin (already clothed) at the truck stop where you beat up waves of thugs and steal a motorcycle. The T-1000 then pursues you and John Connor in a semitruck down a water canal in downtown Los Angeles. Once John is out of harm's way, you'll have to free Sarah from the hospital, bomb Cyberdyne headquarters, and eventually make your way to the steel works for the final showdown.
The soundtrack, composed by Geoff Follin, is excellent; the cutscenes look great; and the stages do a solid job at turning the film's action sequences into gameplay. I especially liked the attention paid to the little details, like the way the game rewards you for non-lethal takedowns of civilians at the hospital. The difficulty level is set high and extra lives and continues are scarce, but with enough patience and practice, T2 is a satisfying cart to master. Terminator 2 for the NES may not have a great reputation, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
