Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Genesis) Playthrough
A playthrough of U.S. Gold's 1992 license-based action game for the Sega Genesis, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Played through on the hard level.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Action Game, a 1989 LucasArts-published computer game from Tiertex, was something of a hit in its time. It saw numerous ports and remakes on various platforms in the years that followed.
This 1992 version for the Sega Genesis was set to become the best of the bunch. It was remade from the ground up to leverage the console's strengths and deliver an arcade-like experience that the computers of the time couldn't quite manage. The graphics, the sound, and the fluidity of the screen scrolling were all massively improved, and the controls were a natural fit for the three-button Sega gamepad. The game also featured heavily reworked level designs and tweaks made to the gameplay mechanics, but instead of working to fix any of the original game's underlying design issues, Tiertex doubled down on them.
On the Genesis, Indy still takes fall damage and loses health whenever he whacks his head on the ceiling, only now, his whip loses power with each swing, random hazards appear out of nowhere, the enemies swarm you like flies, and the stages have been filled with insta-kill traps. In its attempt to ratchet up the challenge, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade confidently ticks every single item on the "ways to ruin someone's fun in a platformer" checklist.
The only upshot here is that it makes the NES version ( • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (N... ) seem palatable in comparison. If you're looking for a reason to hate video games, play this.
