Super Retro GP by Dangerous Derk Interactive, 2024.

A modern reworking of Virtua Racing, that's (as of making this video) in Early Access. Featuring a wide range of cars with differing performance stats (based on classic 1980s and 1990s designs), the game currently has just 4 circuits, of which one is the legendary Birmingham Superprix track, rendered in flat shaded polygons!

Handling is interesting, defined by which car you pick. Some are faster accelerating, some corner better, some are tougher. The engine sound perfectly recreates the odd electronic whirr that Virtua Racing also had, and the music stabs as you cross checkpoints are spot on too.

You will have to play this with a wheel though, it's pretty twitchy on joypad, but the force feedback works well too, recreating the arcade feel of loading up force as you steer.

Overall it's a good game so far. The Birmingham track is a bit narrow though, which can lead to chaos! It'll be interesting to see what tracks follow. One seems to possibly be Crystal Palace, which also recently appeared in SPGP Super Polygon Grand Prix.

One to watch, although the solo developer is also working on a raft of Sega clones, so when this one will be finished remains to be seen!

1. Race Start (Monza): 0:00 Forest Falls Raceway captures the vibe of the beginner stage of Virtua Racing perfectly.

2. Spray Effects (Silverstone): 0:35 This is the Matterhorn Pass track, with random optional snow storm in effect, in replay mode, channeling Virtua Racing's intro sequence.

3. Tunnel & View (Monaco): 0:56 Here's the Birmingham Superprix track, in all it's flat shaded detail!

4. Wet Track (Spa-Francorchamps): 1:20 Sandstorm Motorplex is a sweeping track over a hill and back down the other side.

5. Pitstop (Interlagos): 1:41 There are pits and they will fix your visual damage if you drive through them, but they don't seem to fix the physical damage (here smoke, before the next hit sees your car flip!).

6. Huge Crash (Montreal): 1:51 Back to Birmingham Superprix for some critical damage and a flip through the air!
