The beginning of a legendary crossover series. A four player platform fighting game where you knock your opponents off stage into the danger zone. Smash 64 is a small budget game that would get sequels with much higher budgets. Featuring a cast of Nintendo characters, with eight playable characters from the go, and four that are unlockable. Intended as a Japan only release title, sales exceeded expectations and would get localized to other countries.
Fans often debate if Smash is a fighting game or not. Many regions label it as a fighting game, while in Japan, Smash and similar games like Power Stone are known as "Battle Royale" games. Regardless, Smash Bros games have been featured at fighting game tournament events.
Anyhow, I play through the game as perhaps the most recognizable character in gaming history, Mario Mario. Originally known as "Jump Man" in his debut game, Donkey Kong. Mario is an easy to pick up character for beginners. He has typical shoto stuff like a fireball, upper jump attack, and tornado. Bonus fight after the credits.
