Super Star Path Game Sample - PC/Indie
Spanish studio, DYA Games, has been gaining momentum with their growing skills in the game development scene, having released one successful game after another with no signs of slowing down. While they are best known for "Bot Vice" and "Strikey Sisters", their first release, "Super Star Path", is still a fun and simple, albeit flawed, little diversion. What can best be described as part vertical SHMUP, part color match puzzler, and part Roguelike, the player is tasked with saving humanity from the onslaught of alien invaders who want to take back what's theirs.
The game features six levels where players blast loads of aliens, earn gems to purchase new ships, and battle vicious bosses at the end of each stage. At its core, it's like almost every shooter you've ever played, but there are two main differences: most enemies are stationary and create chains of explosions when shot, and the placement of enemies and obstacles are random. Enemies of the same type create an explosion that travels until it reaches the end of the line, where it crystallizes adjacent aliens who then become indestructible. This causes you to have to occasionally scan the playfield and chart your path carefully, otherwise you can get stuck and crushed by the ever-moving screen.
There are also a few special aliens on each level who give you green emeralds needed to clear the game as well as ability upgrades you can use separately to upgrade your favorite ships. Ships come with different statistics, limiters, and special abilities, and using the right ones can make levels much easier than they would be otherwise. As for the audio/visuals, it features the same bright and detailed pixel graphics of their other works with an equally compelling soundtrack and a little bit of voiced dialog for good measure. If there was anything to leverage against the game, it would be that the levels are about the same length and the bosses abilities are too similar (with a few different but similar waves of attacks and enemy obstacles). There is also no rapid-fire feature, which may bother some. The game can be completed within an hour or so and I would've said the game was a steal at its original price ($3, though they've been as low as $1), but they've actually been raising their prices... I'd say this is fair for physical media with actual supply and demand issues (depending on the price), but increasing the price of digital media that's not even in Early Access is... well, it's not exactly a great practice, but it does conversely reward early adopters. Super Star Path is currently $5 and goes on sale every now and then. You can get it at:
