Super Stardust HD - PlayStation 3 - Arcade mode gameplay first stage & boss [4K60]
Many people were surprised to see Housemarque classic Amiga game Stardust and its sequel Super Stardust get a PlayStation 3 update. The original was a late Amiga title that was a superb mix of Asteroids and Space Harrier style gameplay. This HD version is more a follow up in many regards than a remake which tries to bring the Asteroids format into 3D with the ship flying over the surface of a planet that rotates.
It's an interesting concept that is on the whole put together very well, but this version come across as rather bland with the level designs and colours used for the background. The on rails Space Harrier section that broke up the Asteroids gameplay are also gone and the end result is a game that just isn't as good as the original Amiga titles.
The presentation is bland and boring, which doesn't help and this game just seems to be missing that wow factor. It also doesn't quite have the humour of the original games either with the jokey final bosses you had originally. So no Professor Schaumund the mad penguin and his giant Duck Star. The shooting gameplay is first class, but there is just something dry about it that leaves you a bit cold when playing. It misses the on rails levels hugely and for a studio that made arcade games you expect a flashy intro to welcome you to the world of Super Stardust again there is nothing here. Again unlike the original which had a Star Wars like text screen and a CGI intro for ship launches.
All in all the game feels unfinished in many areas with how the presentation comes across, with text just over a stage in the game, no intermission screens either between stages. There's a truly great game here, that just needs some extra work and polish to make it the game it needs to be. It's an enjoyable good arcade style game, but not a great one.
