Super Widget (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Atlus's 1993 license-based platformer for the SNES, Super Widget.
Super Widget is the sequel to Atlus's 1992 NES title (Widget), a platformer that, while not without its issues, was a pretty good game. However, Super Widget bests it in all respects, and barely resembles the original title besides the obvious shared license.
The graphics are great here - the sprites are all quite a good size and are loaded with all sorts of little animation flourishes, and the whole thing pops with a ton of bright, Saturday-morning cartoon-like colors. The sound is about the same quality as Atlus's other SNES games (it reminded me a great deal of Super Valis IV), and there are a few neat voice samples thrown in for effect.
It plays far better than you'd expect from this style of 3rd party hop-and-bop style action. The controls are smooth and responsive, without any real delays, awkward jump arcs, or slippery walking to deal with. You can also change forms to suit the stage you are in by becoming a bird, a robot, a centaur, an octopus - there's quite a bit of variety for you to experiment with between them all. All in all, I'd have to say that I would rank this not far from the better Capcom efforts - it's excellent all-around.
The only real drawback is that the game is easy and it's pretty short. Of course, if you don't like your games beating you into the ground every two seconds, this might be just the thing. It might not last that long, but you'll have fun with it while it lasts - especially if you were ever a fan of the TV show.
