484A playthrough of Konami's 1993 license-based platformer for the Sega Genesis, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure.
Unlike many of Konami's Sega Genesis games, Tiny Toons doesn't really mimic the gameplay or reuse the assets from the equivalent SNES title: this is an entirely original game. And, unlike some of those games (glares at Sunset Riders), this one about matches the quality of its SNES counterpart.
It's an old-school hop-and-bop platformer all the way through, feeling like Super Mario Bros. with a big ol' dash of Sonic the Hedgehog thrown in for good measure - this game can be fast!
There are plenty of secrets to find, like alternate levels (there is an overall total of 33 stages - that's quite a few!) and bonus stage portals that let you run around Wackyland for power ups and extra lives. You can also grab special icons that all you to summon a helper buddy to clear the screen of any enemies, which can be useful in certain situations.
Don't be fooled by the license though - this is a fairly difficult game. It's certainly not Contra, but anyone that played this as a kid can attest to how many insta-kill spike traps are laid directly in your path.
I love the graphics - the sprites are on the small side, but the animation and color is great, and the game is loaded with examples of Konami's classic attention to detail: just watch Buster fall flat on his face when he trips over a soda can, or the stunned look he gives when he steps on and gets smacked in the face with a rake.
I didn't go through every stage and bonus area here - it is a beginning-to-end playthrough, but I wasn't going for a 100%.
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure is a great game. Even if it's not terribly original (and even if the dialogue in no way carries the tone of the show!), it's all so well done and polished that you don't be able to help but have a good time with it.
