King of Kings: The Early Years (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Wisdom Tree's 1991 NES game, King of Kings: The Early Years.
Each of the three games on the cartridge are played in this video:
00:22 The Wise Men
33:22 The Flight to Egypt
50:56 Jesus and the Temple
Well, since it's Easter, it seemed like it might be time for an unlicensed Christian-themed platformer!
Please, I know you're enthusuastic, but try to show some restraint. It wouldn't do for you to hurt yourself.
So obviously Wisdom Tree was not an official Nintendo licensee, but how does their product stand up? Well, if you strip away the Sunday school trappings, you get an extremely mediocre platformer that really isn't any worse than your typically bland, uninspired yet officially licensed NES platformer. It's much better than some Acclaim titles, I can assure you.
The three games really don't differ much from one another - they all have a different "goal", but they all entail running from left-to-right, collecting shiny things and avoiding/killing random enemies. The whole Bible thing never seems to carry much influence on the game beyond vaguely Middle Eastern stereotype-laden tile sets. Oh, and you get to listen to Greensleeves on loop for several stages - just don't mistake it for King's Quest. Oh, and it also features Go Tell it on the Mountain for another several set of stages - it's very inspiring, I know.
It's extremely meh. I remember going to my aunt's place as a kid, and she had like six games, this one included. Only once we had exhausted everything else (including Barbie) would this one get put in. That would not have been the case, however, if she had had X-men.
