There have been many challengers to the Man of Steel among various #supermananalogue characters, but only one has made him kneel!

Original Text: Over the years, Superman has been faced with a number of first who hailed from Krypton. Zod is the most famous, but I'm going to cover all of them since they tend to be similar. In each case, they could have been a #SupermanAnalogue, but they're choices led them astray.
Zod is definitely the one we think of first. However, it was only recently that we had a satisfactory definitive version for the mainstream books. There was a Pantheon of super criminals over the years with identical backstories.
That changed with Superman 2. Terrance Stamp nailed the part and cemented the role in pop culture even without a version in the comics to really cling to. The impact was so big that there have been several attempts to feature the character without him being an actual Kryptonian.
The version with the most lasting impact would be the Zod of the Pocket Universe (Bringing it the fuck back!) who attacked a Superboy-less Earth and wiped out all life, prompting the creation of the Matrix Supergirl.
This led to Superman being forced to kill Zod and his compatriots with Green Kryptonite. This act tormented Superman for years.
There have been a Russian Zod with red solar charged powers and Elseworld versions, but they didn't stick. Smallville had a version too.
And of course, #ManofSteel featured a version of the character. While the movie has some flaws, I enjoyed their take on Zod.
However, like I said, there have been a bunch of super criminals. The animated series went with Jax-Ur and Mala, but the story is the same.
Villain of the phantom zone, freed in modern times, yadda yadda yadda.
Character after character popped up over the years.
Like fucking "Kil-Lor" (really?) Whose only twist was that he was in suspended animation in space rather than the phantom zone.
Individually, each is a dread inspiring villain, but remember that this is a series where Jimmy Olsen became a we're full on multiple unrelated occasions.
But hey, it certainly makes for a tense story when it's a trope that isn't over used.
I really liked how it was handled in season 1 of Supergirl for example.
I'm glad that comics have caught up to the broader media to have an ur-example of the trope, because it is a compelling idea. It's certainly fodder for a multitude of stories, as we've seen.
