You know, over my 42 years on this thing we call Plant Earth, I’ve lost many things. Girlfriends, jobs, my hair which rather surprisingly didn’t come with a lifetime guarantee, that roll of Sellotape and the most important item ever to grace a bloke’s wardrobe, pants. I’m serious, where the hell do they go and what does this mean for the future of menswear. Well, since we’re all going to be ruled by giant robot blokes from SkyNet anyway, Im going to have to solve the problem myself before old man winter arrives and freezes my credentials. One man who doesn’t suffer from a lack of pantage is long haired bloke Snake who returns for the 3rd Metal Gear Solid adventure on the PS2 . Yes, indeed, Snake Eater is the game that drastically changes up the stealth formula with some of the most impressive graphics, gameplay. Tight Hollywood esque script and of course buckets of violent action that not even Eastenders can rival even with both Mitchell brothers present. Those blokes and birds and Konami have doubled down and created a more realistic cinematic experience which serves as a prequel of sorts to the previous adventures. That’s right it’s the swinging sixties when Hey Mr Tambourine man was your mums favourite song and when frilly shirts and flairs were very much in fashion. The main character may look like Snake, talk and act like Snake but he smokes like Dot Cotton and moves like Jagger. Yes, this time around the player is thrust trouser first into playing as the legendary Big Boss who was referenced in the MGS prequels. The World is once again in danger as Lighting bloke Volgin and his crack team of Cobras are set on ruling the world with the Shagohod a walking death tank which is outfitted with every weapon known to mankind but can still pick up Radio Caroline! As usual its up to Snake to stop them at all costs.

Where as the previous titles were set in a massive Alaskan Base a tanker and a plant. Konami have gone all I’m a celebrity and plonked Snake into a huugee jungle where he must sneak through his environments like a mouse wearing ballet pumps, hunt for food as the local Co-op is shut and avoid soldier blokes as much as possible as the AI has been ramped up to the max. I’m not messing around, these blokes have been to Specsavers and can spot a Gnat at 100 paces and if poor Snake is seen the penalty is much harsher if they decide to contact their mates via radio and surround him So, hiding won’t always cut it this time and you will be hunted unmercifully by these blokes in beige. Luckily, this time around Snake can use various forms of camouflage collected throughout the game to help him blend in with his environment and to lesson the probability of being seen. So will Snakes 3rd adventure be the best one so far, or will it prove to be just like the Blue Peter time capsule trying to hold onto nostalgia but producing nothing new. Well, I spent a week with the game to see if I could develop the skills to be a Snake Eater and to see if it holds up better then my Uncle Barrys dance moves.
First things first, There’s an epic 20 minutes of cutscenage at the start which introduces Snake and his Codec chummies this time it’s Major Zero or Ian to his mates, My new wife Para Medic who just like me enjoys movies and she seems to be captivated with the rolling lilt of my voice and slightly older Bird The Boss who taught Snake everything he knows.
The main objectives are to rescue rocket scientist bloke Sokolov who is being forced by Volgin to build the Shagohod and to rendezvous and work with double Agent Eve or Tanya to her mates. Eve pops up every now and again and I’m sorry Paramedic, but as riveting as our Codec conversation’s are, Eve is all action and like many birds fancied me.
After being quite literally thrown into the deep end of the jungle, it was time to soak up the atmosphere and collect my backpack. After doing so, I decided that I would reach down inside myself, even lower than before and try and play the best I could without being seen.
