Swordbreaker Origins - Video Game Review
2In Swordbreaker Origins, you play as a young adventurer known as Swordbreaker, whose life of peace and tranquility is disturbed when a group known as the Mingals threaten the borders of Dorgan (where our young hero lives), and will stop at nothing to destroy or subjugate the entire kingdom. It is up to Swordbreaker to vanquish them with defeat…or be defeated himself, dooming his entire kingdom in the process.
The game essentially plays like a Choose Your Own Adventure book in video game form. There are 8 endings that Swordbreaker can discover through your choices along the way, the kingdom crafted in Dorgan has mystery, wonder, and potential hazards around every corner, and you choose how Swordbreaker must proceed with interactions he has with people he encounters throughout his journey. The art aesthetic is beautiful and well done, and the gameplay is pretty simple – in line with other interactive experiences structured like literature (think interactive comic book games).
The exception to this is various minigames you play throughout
Swordbreaker’s journey, but the majority of gameplay is limited due to the nature of the game’s format, so to speak.
Swordbreaker origins is $9.99 right now on Steam as well as Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox storefronts.
Developed and Published by Sometimes You, Swordbreaker: Origins is an Indie Adventure Game that released May 5th, 2023 for MS Windows, Nintendo Switch and last gen and current gen Xbox and Playstation consoles. For this review video, I played the Playstation 4 version on my Playstation 5 via backwards compatibility.
