Swords and Soldiers for PlayStation 3
Welcome back to another edition of PlayStation GameZown Mini Reviews, where we take a look into PlayStation 3s Multiplatform, and Exclusive games. Todays video is on the newest hot PlayStation Network title that just became available Tuesday September 21st, Exclusively to PlayStation Plus users (for now). That game being Swords and Soldiers!
Swords and Soldiers is a cute, and funny 2D side scrolling RTS style game where you use gold miners to collect gold as you upgrade your arsenal and troops to defend against the enemy, and then conquer them to take the treasure. There are three scenerios to choose from, each with a different treasure to get. And each scenario has 10 stages for a total of 30 stages!
Most people know this game by now as a WiiWare title, in fact one of the most popular WiiWare titles produced! The difference in this version is of coarse true native 1080p graphics with reconfigured controls to work with both analog sticks for more precise movements and faster selections. Also added to this incredible game is an online multiplay mode and native 3D mode for people with 3D television sets, and also various other 3D modes for people with red/blue style glasses. The effect and depth of the native 3D on my Panasonic 50" 3DTV looks simply outstanding and is another great example of what games will be like this generation with a 3D upgrade. I simply love it!
The graphics for Swords and Soldiers are simply outstanding! The beautifully hand drawn 2D artwork in this game is pure eye candy, and I really love the style/look of it as well! You'll be hard pressed to find a better looking 2D game to port over from the Wii, and with the graphical upgrades this game received make a great looking game even better!
The soundtrack in Swords and Soldiers is pretty great, with a pure orchestrated soundtrack playing throughout the game. Sadly as great as it is, there is a problem that just kills me. Everything comes across in mono sound making the experience a little less than what it could have been. Otherwise, the music in this game is great!
The sound effects are good in this game, and there are quite a few of them as well. However, everything again being in mono takes away from the experience, and what could have been incredible sounding in 7.1 LPCM, ends up just good in mono. I really expected more for the sound effects dept with all the time they took giving it decent effects for each weapon, and explosion etc...
The controls couldn't get much easier for a RTS game as you simply use an analog stick to move the screen back and forth, and use the top buttons in conjunction with an analogue stick to select upgrades, and to choose which characters to send out to battle. It's very simple to master, and a shitload of fun to play! It's nearly perfect!
About the video: Busy busy busy, but not too busy to make a new video! I wanted to try to review a game that is considered brand new to the PS3 for the first time in awhile, and as soon as I heard this game was coming out on PSN, and I saw what style game it was, I just had to get my hands on it and give it a review! Right now it is exclusive to PS+ users but will be available to all PS3 owners this coming Tuesday, September 28th! I'm glad I was able to get this review video out there in a timely matter this time around, and hope to be able to do this with future videos!
Bottom line: Swords and Soldiers is a RTS that has a great amount of fun for anyone that enjoys the RTS genre with its single player campaign, and has some nice replayability online as well! There might be a few flaws like mono music and sound effects which slightly dampen the overall effect the game has, but the enhancements to its graphical appearance, new tighter control scheme, and new online mode more than make up for its shortcomings. I would seriously recommend the purchase of this game when it hits the masses tuesday, and if your sitting on the fence waiting for a good review, then this is it! PlayStation GameZown gives this game a rating of 9 out of 10! (Incredible!)
This game is in 1080p native, has 3D support, Dual Shock 3 support, Trophy support, and Mono Sound.
