O V E R V I E W:
System Shock 2, released in 1999, is an action role-playing survival horror video game created by Ken Levine and developed in collaboration between Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios. Set within a cyberpunk vision of the year 2114, the game unfolds on a starship plagued by a catastrophic genetic infection.
In this gripping adventure, players step into the boots of a soldier tasked with halting the relentless spread of this deadly outbreak. Set in a cyberpunk vision of the year 2114, the game unfolds on a starship. Players step into the shoes of a soldier tasked with halting the spread of a genetic contagion that has wreaked havoc on the vessel. The game combines first-person combat and exploration with role-playing components, allowing players to enhance their skills and acquire traits, including hacking and psionic abilities.
This video walkthrough has been recorded on Impossible Difficulty, the hardest difficulty setting in the game. The different areas (i.e. decks) of the game have been bookmarked into chapters for convenience.
Although I don’t get to listen to all of them, I have also collected all 138 Audio Logs throughout the game and have timestamped them in the comments below. Furthermore, the locations of all key items needed for progression in the game have been timestamped below as well.
System Shock 2, on Impossible Difficulty, makes for a very challenging action-RPG game. However, I have made sure to edit out the saves/loads in this walkthrough to facilitate more seamless viewing.
T H E S T O R Y S O F A R:
In 2072, Earth and its solar system colonies are under the control of powerful megaconglomerates, led by TriOptimum Corporation. However, a catastrophic event unfolds when an employee named Edward Diego, aided by a hacker, unleashes the rogue AI SHODAN on Citadel Station, resulting in chaos, cyborg transformations, and averted global disaster.
The incident sparks widespread rebellion against corporate rule, leading to the formation of the Unified National Nominate (UNN), as governments tighten their grip on society and business, stifling technological progress.
Fast forward 35 years, UNN Nobel Laureate Marie Delacroix makes a breakthrough in Faster Than Light (FTL) technology, sparking hopes for exploration beyond the solar system. However, concerns about the technology's reliability emerge.
Tensions escalate as the UNN and TriOptimum clash over control of FTL technology. After months of negotiations and a mysterious death, a compromise is reached. The Von Braun, an FTL starship, is allowed to embark on a historic voyage, tethered to the military heavy destroyer Rickenbacker, with the UNN personnel aboard.
Excitement about potential extraterrestrial discoveries reignites, but as the mission progresses, tensions rise between the civilian and military crews due to technical malfunctions and interpersonal conflicts.
The situation becomes increasingly volatile, and on June 10, 2114, a distress signal from the Tau Ceti system, far beyond known space, changes the course of the expedition.

Initial Setup
At the start of the game, you can customise your skill set through a choice of career missions. Throughout the game, you have opportunities to guide your character’s specialisation through the use of cybernetic modules and upgrade units.
A Marine, trained in combat skills for years, might fight past several enemies to reach an important switch, while an OSA agent with psionic talents might hide himself from his enemies to walk past them. A UNN naval officer might use his technical skills to hack into a nearby gun turret and let it destroy the enemy.
I have edited the Ramsey Recruitment Center section out as it slows down the pace of the walkthrough but I have laid out the options I selected below:
Class: Navy
Year 1 - UNN Lucille Military Police
Year 2 - Laverne Tactical Training School
Year 3 - Io Survival Training School
Body of the Many (Conservationist Approach)
My gameplay technique/method changes here drastically as the emphasis switches greatly over to conserving as much ammunition as possible. I “wuss” out on a lot of things such as running from the wasps and using the crystal shard a lot more. However, this is what’s needed in order to make sure that I have enough ammunition to take over to the next section, where I will fight Shodan. Fighting Shodan on Impossible Difficulty is no easy feat and the way to ensure you have a fighting chance is by conserving ammunition.
