Tails of Trainspot - Game Review
Hey there, fellow gaming enthusiasts, and welcome back to our channel, Veteran Game! Today, we are diving headfirst into the charming and stimulating world of "Tails of Trainspot", a delightful puzzle game that's sure to get your gears grinding. Now available on Nintendo Switch and soon to be released on Steam this July 31st, 2023, it's a perfect fit for those who enjoy cracking a good puzzle and getting engrossed in a fun narrative.
From the get-go, "Tails of Trainspot" immerses us in its world, introducing us to its story and characters. At first glance, you might think, "Oh, it's just about connecting trains to stations", but don't let the simplicity fool you. Though theoretically an easy game, the practical execution requires some solid mental gymnastics.
Set in the bustling Packan Islands, the hub of manufacturing and production in this new industrial age, we find ourselves navigating the inadequate transport network of the Island Railway. You, alongside rookie engineers Timo and Toby, step in to bridge this gap, ensuring manufactured goods get from point A to B without a hitch. The journey unravels delightful new characters and engaging mini-games, keeping you entertained throughout.
The core gameplay is pure puzzle-solving. The aim? Connect the numbered stations via train tracks, and do it within a specified budget. This budget is clearly visible at the top left corner of the screen for you to monitor. It gets trickier as stations range from one to eight, indicating the number of rails required to connect. Remember, we're operating within a budget, so planning and strategy are crucial.
Like all puzzle games, "Tails of Trainspot" operates on a set of rules. Tracks can only be laid vertically or horizontally between two stations. Tracks can't cross each other, and you must connect all stations correctly to move onto the next challenge. And believe me, these challenges scale up as you progress. But the great thing is, the difficulty never quite reaches the point of frustration--it always remains within the realm of challenge, keeping you motivated and engaged.
Aside from the main puzzles, you're introduced to a smorgasbord of intriguing characters, a storyline that keeps you hooked, and even an endless and ranking challenge mode to really test your puzzle-solving skills. And just when you think you've got a handle on things, the game throws in delightful mini-games, including making bento boxes, running a drink bar, and rolling sausage dice. Although, I have to admit, as much as these mini-games offer a nice diversion, a few more station connection puzzles wouldn't go amiss.
Visually, "Tails of Trainspot" is a treat. Bright, colorful, and teeming with life. Characters don't speak a recognizable language, but their gibberish reminds me of Animal Crossing's charm. While playing on the Nintendo Switch, you'll be using the joy-con. Surprisingly, there's no touchscreen functionality, which seems like a missed opportunity. The controls mostly work well, except for a few instances where there's a slight delay in laying the track between stations, but it's not a game-breaker.
So there you have it, folks! "Tails of Trainspot", a beautifully crafted puzzle game that balances fun with challenge. Its engaging storyline, intriguing characters, and testing puzzles make it a commendable choice for any puzzle game aficionado. All in all, if you love getting lost in a world of puzzles and trains, I highly recommend hopping aboard the "Tails of Trainspot" express. You're in for a ride!
