The Lara Croft Collection - Game Review
The Lara Croft Collection - Game Review
Hello there, gaming veterans! Today, we're taking a thrilling trip down memory lane, revisiting the iconic character Lara Croft in her eponymous collection on the Switch. Imagine my shock when I realized that 'Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light,' the unique isometric Tomb Raider game, came out way back in 2010! And today, it finally marks its entry onto the Switch, alongside its sequel, 'Temple of Osiris,' in the Lara Croft Collection.
These top-down action-adventure games truly stand out as some of the best adventures of the fearless, shorts-clad tomb raider, Lara Croft. With a hefty mix of puzzles, platforming, and plenty of action, these games are a treat for both long-time fans and newcomers. The Collection not only brings the two games to the Switch but also throws in a bonus - seven DLC packs, including a Deus Ex themed skin pack for the second game.
'Guardian of Light,' which predates the 2012 reboot, introduced an isometric viewpoint to the Tomb Raider series. The game spins a captivating tale of Lara’s quest for the fabled Mirror of Smoke and the ensuing battle with an ancient demon. While it can be played solo, the co-op mode shines, allowing Lara and her partner Totec to work together, solving intricate puzzles, destroying ancient craftsmanship, and battling foes.
The gameplay remains incredibly competent and engaging despite some camera issues with the isometric viewpoint. Lara's arsenal of weapons, including her signature dual pistols, and collectible idols and artifacts, adds a flavorful depth to the action.
Now, onto 'Temple of Osiris,' a graphically superior game despite its shorter runtime. It expands on the multiplayer component, supporting up to four players. This sequel sees Lara joining forces with Egyptian gods to gather the pieces of Osiris before they fall into the wrong hands. Once again, exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat take center stage, with added features like a magical staff, more gear, and dynamic puzzles changing with the number of players.
While both games suffer from a distant camera issue when played in handheld mode, the games still shine on the larger screens. Despite showing their age, especially on the Switch, the gameplay and puzzles of both games remain top-tier.
So whether you're a Lara Croft aficionado or a curious newcomer, the Lara Croft Collection promises a unique and interesting adventure. While neither game is incredibly long, the included DLC packs, combined with the option of chasing 100% completion, provide enough content to keep you engrossed. So grab your adventure gear and get ready to join Lara on her exciting escapades. Happy gaming, folks!
