Today V will be taking on the main mission, "The Pickup." V meets with Meredith Stout and discovers she is investigating a Flathead stolen by the Maelstrom gang. She has detained Anthony Gilchrist on suspicion of leaking information leading to the ambush. V agrees to help retrieve the Flathead, and she provides an infected DataShard to buy back the Flathead. V then meets up with Jackie at the Maelstrom hideout and discusses the plan before entering the hideout. The chip is infected with malware. V can warn Royce of the virus and pay with the chip without having to remove the malware. However, V can attempt to copy and remove the malware, yielding the Synapse Burnout QuickHack. Removing the malware after the mission is over will yield 10,000. It's ideal to leave the chip alone until after the mission, copy the malware for the quick hack, and then remove it for the extra money. The choices made after entering the hideout lead to one of three mutually exclusive endings:
This occurs if all of the following conditions are met: V doesn't take the chip from Stout. V doesn't attack any gang members in the hideout. When Jackie refuses to sit down, V asks him to. Pay Royce $10,000 of V's own money. V obtains the Flathead, and Dum Dum will give V his Black Lace inhaler if V has the Streetkid lifepath. This is the only way to unlock access to the Maelstrom Weapon Vendor, and this is also the only option that keeps Dum Dum alive, allowing V to kill or incapacitate him during a later mission to get his iconic gun.

This occurs if all of the following conditions are met: V takes the chip from Meredith. V doesn't attack any gang members in the hideout. When Jackie refuses to sit down, V asks him to. V pays Royce, and after the transaction, Mili-Tech storms in and starts attacking. After helping Maelstrom and escaping the plant, Anthony Gilchrist will appear at the end of the mission, acknowledging that they are now even saving one another's lives. This will result in Gilchrist eventually having Meredith Stout killed. Having the Nomad lifepath, V can also expose him as the mole by finding his message to Maelstrom on a computer at the Maelstrom HideOut, and Gilchrist will promise an incentive to keep the information confidential. As the reward for keeping the secret, there will be a crate containing Mili-Tech equipment at V's Apartment in Act 2.

This occurs if any of the following conditions are met: V attacks the gang members in the hideout, killing Royce. When Jackie refuses to sit down, V won't ask him to, killing Royce. Paying Royce with the chip without removing its malware and killing him or killing Royce during the conversation. This is the only way to obtain Chaos from Royce. If V takes the chip from Meredith Stout, this option will result in her appearing at the end of the mission, and she will be impressed and suggest working together again. This unlocks Venus in Furs in Act 2. This will also result in Anthony Gilchrist being killed. Having the Nomad lifepath, you can also expose him as the mole. You will then be able to explain to Meredith how Mili-Tech's convoys in the border area get compromised and how to better protect them, which will cause her to be extra impressed and leave a crate containing Mili-Tech equipment at V's Apartment in Act 2.

Options #2 and #3 allow you to free Brick. Brick will later retake control of Maelstrom even if Royce survives The Pickup mission, which will allow V to play Second Conflict in Act 2 without having to fight. Deciding to kill Brick and then looting his corpse will instead yield 5,000.

The following is the path that yields the maximum monetary reward:
1) Call Meredith Stout, meet with her, and accept her chip without Hacking it.
2) When Jackie refuses to sit down during the conversation with Dum Dum, do nothing, thereby starting hostilities.
3) Read the message from Anthony Gilchrist on the computer in a side room of the first larger hall V enters on his way out if V is a Nomad Lifepath.
4) Kill Brick and loot him for 5,000.
5) Kill Royce, getting 3,000, and loot him, getting Chaos and another 2,000.
6) Outside offers Meredith to work together again and tells her about Gilchrist.
7) After the mission, hack the chip, copy the malware yielding the Synapse Burnout QuickHack, and then remove the malware yielding 10,000.
8) In Act 2, receive Meredith's equipment crate placed in V's apartment for exposing Gilchrist. 9) Later in Act 2, respond to Meredith's text by saying that you like her yielding to Sir John PhalluStiff.
