Around this time last year I made a video about this great little gadget, not knowing the bad publicity it would get later on down the road!
The Lock has been working great for me and has not given up over the harsh winter or tarnished in the summer sun.
So what could possibly happen to cast a doubt over this cool gadget? Well two things actually!
Firstly, a fellow YouTuber called jerryrigeverything bought one and tried to see if he could bust it. Now the saving grace for this bust was that his lock along with possibly a few more had a manufacturing defect that allowed the rear protective cover to be removed using a gopro sticky mount.
There was supposed to be a security pin to stop the disc rotating, but it seems that the pin of this device was not functioning and allowed the cover to be removed.
This allowed access to the internal workings and made breaking the lock quite easy to do. Although he could have just got a large set of bolt cutters and saved us all from his dramatics!
Anyway, the second attack or flaw is more serious in my opinion. The people at pentest partners (security specialists) wanted to take a closer look at this lock and see what the deal was.
They found that the locks AES 128bit security was poorly configured and that the data exchange (Bluetooth) gave away most of the lock's data and therefore made it relatively easy to hack with a knowledge of Bluetooth protocols and some programming skills.
After this they approached TAPPLOCK to make them aware of the risks, and they acknowledged the issue and informed them that they were working on the issue.
Fast forward to mid June 2018 and Tapplock have annouced (albeit quietly) that there is a new app and new firmware available for Tapplock users.
So in the video i will be showing you how to install the new firmware. Hopefully this will be the last time that Tapplock are in the press for the wrong reasons!
